The Brown Horse Inn, near the village of Winster, is tucked away, deep in the Lyth Valley, on the southern fringes of the Lake District National Park. A traditional coaching inn dating back to the 1850s, the Brown Horse has retained its welcoming atmosphere with oak beams, flag floors and real fires, together with a friendly service that makes you feel immediately at home.

Drink – The Lake District in a glass

The Brown Horse serves the full Winster Valley Brewery range of bitters and lagers. We also champion real ales from other local breweries and our cellar is stocked with a fine collection of wines. On a summer day gazing out over rolling green fields or a winter evening sat snug as a bug inside our cosy country inn, there is no better venue to relish a taste of the Lake District.

Food – As local as it gets

Highly regarded by top restaurant critics (read the glowing report from The Times Magazine’s Giles Coren in our bar), the Brown Horse menu offers a contemporary take on traditional Lake District dishes. Our produce couldn’t be any more local, all our meat is reared free range on the Brown Horse Estate and the vast majority of vegetables are from our own gardens. Just about everything else is sourced from surrounding farmers and growers.

Accommodation – Country inn character

Make the most of our Lake District hospitality and stay over in one of our nine ensuite bedrooms, which combine restful country inn charm with modern touches such as flat screen TVs. We have a triple family room, one twin and seven double rooms, special rates are available throughout the year.
