Kissingate Brewery started life at our private address in Crawley.
It was not easy to obtain all the necessary permissions to brew commercially from home, but we got there in end and became fully compliant.
We brewed our first batch of ‘Old Tale‘ Porter on 23rd September 2009.
Indeed it was a day to remember and feel grateful for all the help received from family, friends and suppliers.
After just a few months of producing beer in a very tight space we decided to seek premises elsewhere.
In September 2010 we were lucky enough to find a suitable unit on a farm estate in Lower Beeding. In just over a year we found ourselves moving again into our new and much larger purpose built brewery. Since February 2012 the ‘Pole Barn’ has been Kissingate’s new home.
So, as our brewery started life in Crawley its interesting
to note that our home town has been without one since the
beginning of the last century! The ‘New Road’ Brewery was run
by the Ockendens, father George and son Charles. They
brewed in Crawley High Street from 1878 until 1907. Eventually the Southdown & East Grinstead Brewery bought the business but
closed the operation in Crawley. They too ceased trading in 1924.
